“Banish The Bling:” Joe McCarthy Must Be Break Dancin’ In His Grave

The great Knee-grew author, Fox News contributor and chef (Juan-Tom Soup), Juan Williams writes…

“Banish The Bling

A Culture of Failure Taints Black America

By Juan Williams

Have we taken our eyes off the prize? The civil rights movement continues, but the struggle today is not so much in the streets as in the home — and with our children. If systemic racism remains a reality, there is also a far more sinister obstacle facing African American young people today: a culture steeped in bitterness and nihilism, a culture that is a virtual blueprint for failure.

The emphasis on young people in today’s civil rights struggle is rooted in demographics. America’s black, Hispanic and immigrant population is far younger than its white population. Those young people of color live in the big cities and rely on big-city public schools.

With 50 percent of Hispanic children and nearly 70 percent of black children born to single women today these young people too often come from fractured families where there is little time for parenting. Their search for identity and a sense of direction is undermined by a twisted popular culture that focuses on the “bling-bling” of fast money associated with famous basketball players, rap artists, drug dealers and the idea that women are at their best when flaunting their sexuality and having babies…“The real question is how one does battle with the culture of failure that is poisoning young people — and do so without incurring the wrath of critics who say we are closing our eyes to existing racial injustice and are “blaming the victim.”

Who controls the “Culture of Failure,” the culture of “Bling-Bling?” Who indeed is “poisoning” young people? Who controls what Fiftee Cent burps out of his Gucci sewn handkerchief head? Who controls Hip Hop? Who controls MTV? Cable TV? Hollywood studios? Who has black children believing all they need is one ‘misogynistic, gangsta-refried’ record deal? That all they have to do is trade their black dignity for some gold plated chains?

“They get you drunk and then lock you up for being drunk; they sell you whiskey and then lock you up for being drunk. They sell you a deck of cards and then lock you up for using them…Many of our people turn to crime. Stealing, gambling, prostitution; crimes that have been organized by the white man… You don’t organize any crime HE organizes the crime!”

Malcolm X

HE organizes the brainwashing and the propaganda, too. The white man trots out his “colored mind doubles” (Ishmael Reed) to savage black people and to smudge the fingerprints of racism/white supremacy on the door knobs of our wretched condition. White people control the words and images of black people on the radio, on television, on the movie screen. They have a vested interest in degrading our people – it sells – and they utilize all of their powers to affect this (real) degradation for profit.

And then they get their Juan-Toms to cover their tracks.

  1. I didn’t say this before-but I really like the new site:

[i]Who controls the “Culture of Failure,” the culture of “Bling-Bling?” Who indeed is “poisoning” young people? Who controls what Fiftee Cent burps out of his Gucci sewn handkerchief head? I don’t think that a FOX or Time-Warner stockholders’ meeting is a sea of black people.

Equally important in propagandizing against us is their willful ignorance of black people who are achieving-because they might have opinions that are antithetical to those of the fascists running organizations like FOX.

By the way-the first (and last, hopefully) time I ever saw Juan Williams on television, I remember it quite clearly. He came across as one of FOX’s ‘softball liberals’ paid off to support FOX’s ultra-right wing views, and was subtly supporting torture of American prisoners in that particular argument. The ‘praise with faint opposition’ game.

  2. Hmmm. I realize that statistics show more poverty, lower standard of living, etc., etc., and you can ride or walk around the streets and see evidence of this. However: I don’t really see the ‘failure’, or a ‘culture of failure’ in the sense Williams describes. I see a lot of success, despite obstacles and odds.

  3. MJ: I am assuming you don’t like Juan Williams. (wink).

  4. Blah blah blah. I’m getting pretty tired of the whole debate. Some older cat who repeats the same stuff my parents’ generation said (and their parents, and their parents, ad infinitum) calls out Black youth, and then we call out the guy who calls out Black youth. Making all this a debate about blame whitey vs don’t blame whitey over simplifies things as much as William’s book might. Or Cosby’s statements. Or whatever. I like how Vursatyle said it: “The white man ain’t going to jail, nigga you are.”

Is the rebuttal to Williams’ statement “Who controls the culture of failure?” We know that shit, we know it by heart. We know it’s just like Kanye said, they don’t care. So who does care, and since we do, what do we do about it? I don’t know, does Williams recommend solutions we can debate him about?

Yeah, Professor, I see a lot of success. I saw it when I was coming up. Black doctor lived across the street. Black lawyer next door. Nurse married to real estate agent. Two parent homes. All that. Black men who started with nothing and ended up on top, or Black men from upper middle class families with a long history of higher education in the lineage. Go about 10 miles NW and I don’t see much of that anymore. That is a problem. Calling Juan a “Tom” (though I understand the sentiment, Fox fucker) can’t change the facts, neither does saying that you see a lot of success.

Basically, this is a Coulter/Malkin style money grab; write something with a controversial stance and/or one that will likely cause White Republicans to pull out the plastic and knod at agreement with every page turn. It isn’t even worth the waste of energy spent trying to form a rebuttal or call these cats out (especially since it isn’t really on the merits of their arguments) because these books are written for people who already agree going in.

  5. I don’t consider this a debate; its a counter-propaganda post for those who might be susceptible to the illogic. Also, this post connected to the previous post about “banning” the “N”Word.

It is true we are going to jail, but since that it so it seems important to point out – repeatedly – where we live and how things work.

Those of us who have a deeper understanding of the system need to share – repeatedly – with those who don’t. Sometimes we have to be remedial with our people and our own black selves.

And, I would suggest that refinements to generally understood knowledge are not only possible, but necessary. So, Gandalph, please offer a deeper analysis of the issue if you think there is one.

  6. Max,

We already have the deepest analysis in Williams’ confession:

“we are closing our eyes to existing racial injustice and are “blaming the victim.”

  7. I feel that politicians and journalist like Mr. Williams need to spend some time among the “victims” that he seem to know so much about. This is the advantage that Malcolm X had because he was among the people on the street. I don’t know Juan Williams comings and goings, but my guess is that he can only go by the stats and the images that he see on television news and BET.

  8. I left a comment about your sexism a few weeks ago and you asked for some evidence on your sexism. You are a man, are you not? Then you are sexist. That’s a start. Then there’s your post on what you want from a future girlfriend wherein you outline that she should be of a certain shape and size, love sucking your dick and generally serve your needs. I’m posting here, not because I think there is much use in pointing out your sexism to you, but because I followed a link from a blog I read and it seems that some of the bloggers (women) I read comment here. I wonder why none of these women have called you up on your sexism.
